Find out more about joy as an exploration of beauty: www.bmw.com/5seriesTouring ….. turbine-styling 329 with runflat tyres, 8 J x …. Integrated Owner’s Manual …

IDEALS ARE SHAPED BY IDEAS.
Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder. The beauty of a BMW has its origin in ideas. In the case of the new BMW 5 Series Touring, the designers’ idea was to explore the beauty of dynamism. They chose lines that are as powerful as they are elegant. They created an elongated front section that hints at dynamic ability and at the same time lowers fuel consumption. In the interior they achieved the dif? cult feat of creating harmony through high tension. Find out more about joy as an exploration of beauty: www.bmw.com/5 seriesTouring.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring boasts perfect proportions that create an ideal balance between elegance and sporting appeal. The design is dominated by distinctive lines, from the short front overhang to the muscular tail. The elongated bonnet and long wheelbase lend the vehicle an athletic stance. But this is a car that has to be driven to appreciate its full aesthetic appeal and experience its breathtaking dynamic performance. It makes every day with the new BMW 5 Series Touring a joy.

In the new BMW 5 Series Touring, anticipation turns into exhilaration within seconds. You start the engine, accelerate and immediately become aware that you have never had such an intense road experience before. You yourself can de? ne the parameters of this experience – sporty or comfortable. With the optional Dynamic Driving Control, one press of a button is enough to adjust the driving characteristics of the new BMW 5 Series Touring to your preferences. And to ensure that you can enjoy each kilometre to the full, BMW Ef? cientDynamics is on board as well: a multi-award-winning technology package that ensures considerably reduced fuel consumption, combined with signi? cantly enhanced power.

It is a process utilized by BMW to load application/system specific operating instructions. (Program) into a module/component which already has the systems …
What is Coding?
It is a process utilized by BMW, which groups system specific operating requirements (Data) together and then assigns a label/code to each of these groups of data. The various groups of data are all pre-loaded into system specific “codable” control modules, along with a basic set of operating instructions (Program).
Types of operating requirements:
• Nominal values of device input signals (0.25V to 2.5V, 5W – 25W, …)
• Type of device input signal (PWM, square wave, analog …)
• Operational parameters (device activation/deactivation time, …)
• Market specific operations (O2 Sensors, Fuel Type, Emission Control, …)
• Country Specific Regulations (U.S., Canada, Japan, UK, ECE, …)
• Powertrain Configurations (Manual, Auto, TLEV, ULEV, SULEV, Diesel, …)
The procedure of assigning one specifically labeled group of data to the operating program of a specific control module/component is referred to as “coding”.
A “codable” control module has a basic operating program already installed along with several specific variations of operating data. The coding process allows a specific set of operating data to be assigned to the basic operating program of that module/component, with respect to its specific application.
(Program) into a module/component which already has the systems operating requirements (Data) installed, plus it can be used as a means of updating data and operating instructions previously installed in a control module.
Basic programmable control modules have a pre-defined set of operating data already installed which allows the module to be fairly generic until a specific operational program is installed.
What is the Purpose of Coding and Programming?
As a global manufacturer, BMW must design a large variety of control modules to meet numerous vehicle requirements pertaining to issues such as:
• Country Specific Regulations (U.S., Canada, Japan, UK, ECE, …)
• Vehicle Equipment Level (Phone, Navigation, HiFi, IHKA, IHKR, …)
• Vehicle Powertrain Configurations (Manual, Auto, TLEV, ULEV, SULEV, Diesel, …)
• System Specific Operating Requirements (Nominal values, type of input signal, …)
By using Coding and/or Programming, the large variety of control modules needed can be reduced to a smaller number of model specific hardware variations.

To take full advantage of your BMW Universal BluetoothTM Hands-Free System, we encourage you to take the time to read this manual thoroughly. This User’s …

Congratulations on your purchase of the BMW Universal BluetoothTM Hands-Free System (ULF) for your BMW Group vehicle and for you! The BMW Universal BluetoothTM Hands-Free System will provide an additional convenience feature for you and your passengers.

To take full advantage of your BMW Universal BluetoothTM Hands-Free System, we encourage you to take the time to read this manual thoroughly. This User’s Manual is intended to familiarize you with the details of your Hands-Free System. You will receive important information regarding its operation, which will allow you to use all the functions quickly and in optimal fashion.

“Never use any electronic device or make any inputs while driving that may distract you from driving safely.
Pay attention to traffic laws and road conditions\situations. Safe vehicle operation is the driver’s responsibility. Always wear your safety belt.”

The BMW Universal BluetoothTM Hands-Free System (ULF) utilizes BluetoothTM wireless technology to enable a wireless connection to be established between a BluetoothTM enabled mobile phone and the ULF Control Module installed in the vehicle. The combination of these components results in a new generation of invehicle phone system.

The ULF Control Module forms an interface that allows a mobile phone with the embedded BluetoothTM wireless technology feature to be wirelessly integrated into the vehicle. For the first time BMW is introducing a new generation hands-free telephone system kit that provides the customer with the option of using various BluetoothTM enabled mobile phones (a list of recommended phones is available from your BMW Center).

BluetoothTM wireless technology is a short-range radio frequency technology standard that allows several devices to communicate with each other simultaneously. The standard indicates that up to seven simultaneous connections can be established and maintained at one time, as long as the connected devices are within a range of 10 m (32.8 ft).

Note: The ULF system will allow four phones to be paired to the system at a time and only allow one phone to be connected at a time.

BMW’s philosophy is to build driving machines that respond faithfully and enjoyably to their driver’s commands while also providing the safety, practicality, style, quality, reliability, and durability that help make long-term ownership a rewarding experience. It was BMW’s policy to develop new platforms for its series of cars every 7 to 8 years. New platforms were not simply modifications, but completely new structures. According to Friedrich Nitschke, manager for the BMW 3 series development project, there were three goals for the new 3 series platform that came to market in the 1999 model year. First, it was to generate the highest level of customer satisfaction in its class. Second, it was to utilize the best processes available within BMW. Third, it was to generate the most profit of any BMW series.

Developing the successor to the third-generation of 3 series was a real challenge, since it
had been an extremely successful series. BMW’s chief designer Chris Bangle explains,

There are two ways of doing car design. Either it’s a personality cult, where the designer runs
the show and the car is just an ego toy, or the stylist is more the curator of a heritage and
tradition. Then, the challenge lies in understanding a marquee so well you become part of it.
It’s quite clear my job here is to perpetuate a set of icons.

The overall styling of the 3-series was especially important, and was a limiting factor in its design. Models built on the new platform had to look like a BMW and be recognizable on the highway. Focus groups were used to identify the basic design features that made a BMW recognizable, and those traits were maintained in its design. For example, the BMW logo and “double kidney” grill were key recognition factors. The 3 series position in BMW’s product line set many of the basic characteristics for the new platform, and would determine the basic characteristics of the models using the new platform. For example, the dimensions, engines and transmissions became part of its target definition.

1) OBJECTIVE
a) To replace the 11?Button OBC that came with my 1998.5 E36 M3 with an 18?Button OBC. This requires creating and routing a second wiring harness needed for the 18?Button OBC.
b) Disclaimer: This DIY worked fine for my vehicle. There may be slight differences between vehicles, but the basics should be similar.
2) REFERENCE
a) My car information
i) June 1998 build, AW/BLK
ii) Factory Options
(1) Power Sunroof
(2) Heated Seats
(3) LTW Forged Wheels
iii) BMW Installed Options
(1) Class III OEM Alarm
(2) Euro Headlights, turn signals, rear lights
b) Pelican Guest Technical Article – “BMW On?Board Computer Retrofit/Conversion”
i) http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E36?OBD_Convert/E36?OBD_Convert.htm
ii) Corrections: My install was different from this DIY…differences follow…
(1) X1071?Pin4 (brown/red) routes to the OBC Turn Signal Stalk. The Pelican DIY says to route and tap into the brown/red wire of the OBC Turn Stalk Harness. This was not the case in my install, as the brown/red wire did not cycle the 18OBC. There is a brown/red wire in the OBC Turn Stalk Harness, but it goes to the connector for the slip ring/steering wheel. The OBC Turn signal has one more wire in the harness that the regular turn signal does not have….it is a YELLOW/RED wire. This is the wire I used to make the 18OBC cycle through the functions. As a note, the correct wire can be found by following the two black wires at the base of the stalk to two solder points. One of those wires will make the obc cycle and the other is probably ground (brown). Lars told me that the OBC will cycle when the Pin4 wire gets grounded.
(2) X1071?Pin6 (black/white) routes to the X16 instrument cluster connector. The Pelican DIY says to route this wire to the X16 connector and plug it into the empty X16?Pin21. In my case, Pin21 was not empty. As a result, I just tapped into the existing black/white wire.
(3) X1071?Pin9 (white/gray) routes to the X17 instrument cluster connector. The Pelican DIY says to route this Pin9 wire to the X17 harness and tap into the white/gray wire. In my case, the white/gray wire was missing and the corresponding slot in the X17 connector was empty. As a result, I just spliced a pin to the X1071?Pin9 wire and plugged it into empty the X17?Pin10 location.

UPGRADE I. Our first upgrade will address the biggest shortcoming of all the stock BMW sound systems, BASS, or lack thereof.

Correct speaker level wiring diagram for interfacing with factory head units.

Use only positive (+) speaker wires. Tape off negative (-) speaker wires. Connect “+” speaker wires to RCA center pin conductors. Tie shields (audio return) together and ground to case of radio at back of radio. Repeat for 4 channel system. Use of an a/d/s/ AC502 remote subwoofer level control will allow us to control the volume of our subwoofer from the front of the car. How convenient! This way, we can match the bass level to our own personal taste or to compensate for bass masked by road or wind noise.

Our subwoofer could be the same one we chose for Upgrade I or something more.

The entire system will be powered by an a/d/s/ amp, and will use an AC502 for remote subwoofer level control This BMW system is going to sound dynamic, smooth, and musical, yet still maintain totally stock cosmetics inside the car.

Given the interior dimensions and solid build quality of the BMW 5 Series, we’ll have one excellent sounding audio system that will rival many home systems for sonic quality, and we’ve still maintained absolutely stock interior cosmetics for that low profile look. This is especially important if the car in question is leased, because even at this level of sophistication the car is easily returned to stock at the end of the lease term.

Since the BMW head unit is common ground, all you have to do is put RCA ends on the twisted pairs and plug directly into the amplifier.

Also supplied at the stock amplifier you will find constant +12VDC and a ground referenced to the factory radio. +12VDC is red with a white stripe and ground is solid brown. These wires are a good power source for preamp components.

BMW repair, BMW maintenance, BMW DIY, BMW advice, BMW products … Poster: AC Schnitzer M6 Tension 4-5 D.I.Y.: Drive+Play iPod … excess dirt; use the filter cleaner from the aFe restore kit; … New from aFe: a lifetime BMW replacement air filter that lets more air into your engine. BMW repair, BMW maintenance, BMW DIY, BMW advice, BMW products and performance are unsurpassed. So when aFe came to us and said they also had a line of reusable, OE replacement filters for BMWs, we said we’d take a look. What we saw blew us away. Reusable …

100% engineering-grade polyurethane frame. The frame is soft and pliable to seal better, yet strong and durable to withstand high engine temperatures, (i.e. no plastomers to dry out and crack). And a precise manufacturing process minimizes “wicking” of polyurethane onto the filter media, leaving more usable surface area. • Pliable, progressive, polyurethane bump seal. Some manufacturers use plastisol or foam to seal around their filters in the factory air box. Over time, heat and chemicals harden plastisol and turn foam to dust. (When foam turns to dust in your air box, where do you suppose it goes?) When you install an aFe filter, its progressive bump seal is compressed to fill uneven surfaces; all air flows throughthe filter. • Maintenance is a breeze. How often you’ll need to clean and re-oil your filter depends on your driving conditions; dustier environments will obviously require that you clean your filter sooner. Typically, an aFe filter will require cleaning every 30,000 miles. The procedure is pretty simple: brush off excess dirt; use the filter cleaner from the aFe restore kit; rinse; let dry; re-oil (do not over-oil) and allow to sit overnight. That’s it! The bottom line. aFe makes replacement filters for most BMWs since 1980. They cost, on average, $10 more than other reusable filters, but they’re designed better, built better, they help your BMW perform better and they pay for themselves after just a few filter changes. (Need a further incentive? During January, we’re giving away a free aFe hat with each filter purchased.)

The E30 3-Series range first became available in the UK in March 1983, and
continued in production until April 1991, when the revised E36 3-Series range
(not covered by this manual) was introduced. Convertible and Touring (Estate)
models were introduced for 1988, and these models have continued in E30 form
to date.
The E28 5-Series models were introduced in October 1981, and were superseded
in June 1988 by the revised E34 5-Series range, Touring versions of which
became available from March 1992.
Throughout this manual, E28 models are also referred to as “oldshape”, while
E34 models are designated “new-shape”.
The models covered by this manual are equipped with single overhead cam
in-line four- and six-cylinder engines. Early 316 and 518 models are fitted
with carburettors, but all other models are fitted with fuel injection systems. Transmissions are a five-speed manual, or three- or four-speed automatic.
The transmission is mounted to the back of the engine, and power is transmitted
to the fully-independent rear axle through a twopiece propeller shaft. The final drive unit is bolted solidly to a frame crossmember, and drives the rear wheels through driveshafts equipped with inner and outer constant velocity joints.
The front suspension is of MacPherson strut type, with the coil spring/shock
absorber unit making up the upper suspension link. The rear suspension is
made up of coil springover-shock absorber struts, or coil springs and conventional shock absorbers, depending on model.
The brakes are disc type at the front, with either drums or discs at the rear, depending on model. Servo assistance is standard on all models. Some later
models are equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
All models are manufactured to fine limits, and live up to the BMW reputation
of quality workmanship. Although many of the models covered by this manual appear complex at first sight, they should present no problems to the home mechanic.
